How to be u po?
The definition and standards of beauty among women differ as time changes. It varies among cultures and societies. In the Philippine setting today, Filipinas who are foreign-looking are more admired and idolized. Hence, even in our own country, western standard beauty-- pointy noses, “fair” skin, and long legs are being set as the standard of being “beautiful”. With technology and social media on the rise, we're easily exposed to these types of information which influences us and our thoughts and beliefs. With just one tap, we can be updated about the latest trends and topics.
In line with this, advertisements emerge as they show us how to change our bodies and appearances so that we can achieve the “ideal” and the “perfect”. A lot of women try to reach those standards and imitate celebrities on TV, social media or in magazines.
This work comments on this issue. It aims to educate the masses—especially women, that beauty is something abstract—there is no basis; there are no standards. Women should appreciate more of themselves, and not be afraid to be different. They should not be boxed within the confines of beauty set by others. Instead, they should break that box.
The works are composed of mixed media collages that display cutouts from magazines, thread, and digital works that are carefully combined to form pieces that comment on the issue about beauty and the standards set by society— how we are caged inside this idea of beauty influenced by media and how we should break away from it.

This journey has really thought me a lot in making my future pieces. It has thought me how to be careful in every aspect I include in my art. The experience will stick with me as I grow and develop to become a better artist.
